A Few Words by a Graduate – Sze Nga Wong
Sze Nga Wong, 2022 graduate of Bachelor of Social Work (Honours)
My dream of being a social worker started with a passionate heart to help others.
Four years ago, as I was working in a non-government organization that I found myself very interested in social work. In order to balance work and study at the same time, I chose to study the part-time mode of learning at Hong Kong Nang Yan College of Higher Education with the recommendations by my colleagues. At first, I was worried that I would not be able to find a job after graduation and worse still, my friends also had reservations about my wish. Finally, I decided to enroll in the social work degree programme. My application was successfully accepted by the College at last.
I was very impressed by the devoted teachers, in particularly Dr Walter Yung, Mr. Alex Kwong and Mr. Tommy Fung, who provided appropriate and timely support to our evening study students. During the four years of study, the social work courses provided us with a lot of social work theories and put a lot of emphasis on practical work. With the generous support of the College, I was also awarded the Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship Scheme – Best Progress Award offered by the government of HKSAR. With the recommendations of the Faculty, I successfully grabbed the chance to do my internship in the Social Welfare Department and put into practice of what I learned in the classroom. This benefited me a lot and opening my eyes wide to the authentic practice of the field.
Upon graduation from Nang Yan, I found a job as a social worker in an elderly care center. I am glad that I have fulfilled my dream of being a social worker one step after another.
