A Few Words by a Graduate – Mei Mei Tse

Meimei Catherine Tse, 2022 graduate of Bachelor of Social Work (Honours)

It is a kind of fate to be the first batch of social work graduates of Nang Yan College. The past four years of study have been one of my most valuable learning experiences. Through the participation as the student representative in the Accreditation Bureau and various school committees, it has definitely broadened my horizon.

Special thanks go to the faculty of the academy for their caring, teaching and encouragement. In the teaching and learning, professors often cited case studies and authentic examples which they personally obtained from the industry. We were inspired by engaging in informative discussions to level up our critical thinking skills. This approach provided us with the necessary knowledge to prepare for our internship during study and work after graduation, nurturing my interest in academic research and hopefully, creating an interest for my further study to strengthen my skills and knowledge in my profession in the days ahead.

I had an internship in a non-government organization (NGO), which   deepened my understanding of social work services and improved my interpersonal skills.  The education provided by the College has been widely recognized by other universities and institutions in the way it professionally contributes to the industry and well-being of the clients.

I would like to thank the College for taking good care of us as well as our studies and providing scholarships to encourage us to recognize our academic performance as a positive reinforcement to strive for excellence.  I have been awarded the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award and the Outreach Scholarship. This award strengthened my confidence in academic research. I have also traveled to Italy to learn about social services in the local settings. I collaborated with the Italian institution which provided services for students who have dropped out of school to make use of the learnt knowledge in their jobs. I appreciate very much the idea of “No One Less” even though those cannot complete their education.

I recently stepped into the social welfare industry and became a professional social worker. In just three months, I have been promoted by the organization to be an Assistant Social Work Officer (ASWO), commonly known as ”Aer” Post,  i.e.  a title that graduates with a degree in social work want to have after graduation which is an encouraging affirmation of my performance.  I believe that my academic study  in the College has given me a shot in the arm in my career path.  Here I encourage my fellow students to work hard in the College.  During the study period, one should study hard, obtain the best academic performance, use spare time, participate in different professional courses and academic seminars, and eventually broaden your  scope of knowledge, all of which are surely beneficial to social work.

Thanks again, Nang Yan !

May I wish the College every success!
