A Few Words by a Graduate – Ka Yeung Yu
Ka Yeung Yu, 2022 graduate of Bachelor of Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Chinese
My four years of study at the College have come to an end. I It has been an unforgettable experience. Over the years, I am grateful to meet all the teachers here. When I decided to study at Nang Yan College in the very first place, I have only learnt about Nang Yan from a publication about higher education. Although the College is not as well-known as others, the Chinese courses provided are very attractive. The courses include some topics such as “I Ching”, “Zuo Zhuan”, and “Chinese Semantics”, which are classical in nature that interested me. The professors are all professionals in their respective fields. So, I decided to enroll in the bachelor programme offered by the Chinese Department. If I hadn’t taken this opportunity, I might not have had such an unforgettable study!
I have always had a strong interest in Chinese literature but I had only read some classical novels before I joined Nang Yan College. The more I read, the more I found Chinese Culture profound and wonderful. In particular, during the orientation dinner, when the teachers and students were chatting, the way Prof. Tse talked about “I Ching” was profoundly soul-stirring and fascinating. I realized how interesting Chinese could be, and I further confirmed my decision to study Chinese. I found myself fortunate to be taught by knowledgeable professors here with passion and professionalism. I also learned from them the attitude of being virtuous in the world and the mission of passing the torch in our Chinese culture to the next generation.
Benefiting from the whole-person development of the college, I was fortunate enough to participate in many outbound tours and internship programmes. During my study, I participated in study groups in Taiwan, Xi’an, and Macau, and went abroad for a cultural exchange which broadened my horizon, getting me in touch with matters related to Chinese literature. In particular, while I visited the Stele Forest of Steles in Xi’an, I appreciated the ancient calligraphy steles and admired the beauty of words. I also visited the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library in Macau to see the private collection of ancient books in the library, which was an eye-opening experience. Apart from these, I was recommended by the College to get a summer internship in an educational publishing company to gain an editorial experience that paved me on a road of my future career.
In my leisure time, I actively participated in the activities, lectures and workshops of the College such as Chinese medicine lectures, lip balm DIY workshops, etc. I also served as the student representative of the Faculty of Arts and collected the opinions for other students. For extra-curricular involvements, I took part in student liaison meetings of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) to make recommendations. I also participated in poetry writing competitions that I contributed articles to cultural magazines in order to accumulate meaningful experiences.
Once again, I would like to sincerely thank the teachers for their recommendations. I am now able to go to the Chinese University of Hong Kong for further study in the discipline of Chinese. Looking backward, I am confident to say that the colorful campus life is memorable, fruitful and rewarding. I strongly believe this learning journey would be one of an unforgettable experience throughout my life!
